SKIM LOVE: Eleuthera

On January 30th Alley-Oop Skim introduced it's newest program Skim Love to the Children of Eleuthera, Bahamas. Skim Love was started by Alley-Oop with the purpose of spreading skimboarding and love to underprivileged skim areas and places where skimboards are not easily accessible or affordable.

The goal of the program is to introduce skimboarding to new people while at the same time teaching the values of giving, sharing, and caring about the environment. We hope that while accomplishing these goals we can break down a few cultural barriers and spread the same enjoyment that skimboarding has given us.

This years Skim Love program was based out of Gregory Town on the Island of Eleuthera and held at Surfers Beach with the support of Zap Skimboards, Freak Traction, The Surfers Haven, Island Made Gift Shop, The Laughing Lizard. and many other volunteers.

Our day began at the Cove House in Gregory Town where we had 40 enthusiastic Bahamians show up to be part of the festivities. After a short briefing we charged down to Surfers Beach for a nice skim clinic and lessons with the Alley-Oop Skim crew. Before long the beach was covered with Bahamian boys and girls sliding all over the place and skimming along the waters edge. We of course had a few little challenges to see who the best new riders were, some good laughs, and a-lot of good wipeouts. Lots of fun was had by everyone!

After the clinic we headed back to Gregory Town for a big trash clean-up where the kids piled up about 15 full bags and lots of other random de brie. Once the clean-up was complete we had some refreshments and gave out awards for Best Waves, Attitude, Wipeout, Most Trash picked up, and a few other honors. About 9 skimboards were given away, lots of clothing, and other goodies which allowed everyone to walk away with a prize. There were plenty of smiling faces, new friends, and a new sport introduced to the children of Eleuthera. Truly a day of Skim Love!
